Fourteen days is where Sri Lanka stops being a highlights reel and starts being a proper trip. The extra four days over the standard circuit do not buy you four more destinations — they buy you time to climb Adam's Peak, to spend three nights on a beach instead of two, and to reach the ancient cities that most itineraries skip entirely. This route covers the whole island at a pace that leaves room to stop.
Key Takeaways
- Two weeks covers the ancient cities, hill country, Adam's Peak, a safari and the coast
- The extra days over a ten-day trip are best spent staying longer, not adding stops
- Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa become realistic — they rarely fit into ten days
- Adam's Peak needs a dedicated night and works only from December to May
- Choose your coast by season — south from December to March, east from May to September
- Allow three nights minimum at the beach at the end, or it will not feel like a rest
- Total driving is around twenty hours, spread so no day is longer than four

Day 1 — Negombo
Land, drive twenty minutes to Negombo rather than an hour into Colombo traffic, and do nothing at all. A fish dinner on the beach and an early night is the whole plan.
Stay: Negombo
Days 2 and 3 — Anuradhapura
Drive north, around four hours. This is the stop that ten-day itineraries sacrifice, and it is the one that most rewards having the extra time.
Anuradhapura was the island's capital for well over a thousand years, and what remains is spread across a huge sacred city — enormous brick dagobas, monastery ruins, bathing ponds and the Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree the Buddha sat beneath and among the oldest documented trees on earth.
Hire a bicycle. The site is too large to walk and too interesting to drive.
Day 3 option: Mihintale, a short drive away, where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka. It is a stairway climb to a hilltop with a long view over the plains, best at sunset.
Stay: Anuradhapura Driving: 4 hours on day 2
Days 4 and 5 — Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa
Drive southeast to Sigiriya or Habarana, about two hours.
Day 4 morning: Sigiriya, starting at opening. The rock is fully exposed and the climb becomes unpleasant once the sun is high. Allow three hours.
Day 4 afternoon: Dambulla Cave Temple, or an afternoon safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla.
Day 5: Polonnaruwa, the second ancient capital, an hour east. It is more compact than Anuradhapura, better preserved, and easily the best of the ancient cities to see in a single day. The Gal Vihara rock-cut Buddhas alone justify the drive.
Our Sigiriya guide covers the climb in detail, including whether to do Pidurangala instead.
Stay: Sigiriya or Habarana Driving: 2 hours on day 4
Days 6 and 7 — Kandy
South to Kandy, around three hours, stopping at the Matale spice gardens on the way.
Day 6: Kandy Lake and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, timed for one of the daily puja ceremonies.
Day 7: The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya in the morning, then a Kandyan dance performance in the evening. If you would rather have a day out of the city, the Knuckles range is close enough for a half-day walk.
Stay: Kandy Driving: 3 hours on day 6
Day 8 — Adam's Peak
Drive to Nallathanniya, around three hours through tea country. Check in, eat early, and sleep by eight — you are getting up at half past one.
The climb begins around 2:00am and takes three to four hours up roughly 5,500 steps, arriving at the summit before dawn. It is demanding but not technical, and the sunrise from the top is the single best hour of most people's trip.
This only works between December and May. Outside the pilgrimage season the stairway is unlit and the route is closed in practice. If your dates fall outside it, skip straight to Nuwara Eliya and add a night at the coast instead. Everything you need is in our Adam's Peak guide.
Stay: Nallathanniya Driving: 3 hours
Day 9 — Nuwara Eliya
Sleep in — you have earned it — then a short drive to Nuwara Eliya, stopping at a working tea factory and Ramboda Falls.
Nuwara Eliya is a strange and likeable place, all mock-Tudor houses and clipped hedges at 1,900 metres. Bring warm clothes; nights drop close to freezing from December to February.
Stay: Nuwara Eliya Driving: 1.5 hours
Day 10 — The Train to Ella
Take the train from Nanu Oya to Ella, roughly four hours through the most photographed landscape in the country. Book reserved seats weeks ahead and sit on the right-hand side heading south. Full detail in our hill country train guide.
Arrive mid-afternoon, walk up Little Adam's Peak for sunset, and eat somewhere on the main street.
Day 10 alternative: if you skipped Adam's Peak, take the Nine Arch Bridge and Ella Rock as a full day here instead.
Stay: Ella Travel: 4 hours by train
Day 11 — Safari
Down out of the hills to the southern plains, about three hours.
Yala for the best leopard odds and the most dramatic landscape, accepting that it is busy. Udawalawe for near-guaranteed elephants and far fewer jeeps. Book a vehicle with a tracker, not just a driver.
An afternoon drive on arrival, or a dawn drive the following morning before moving on — dawn is better if your schedule allows.
Stay: Tissamaharama or Udawalawe Driving: 3 hours
Days 12 to 14 — The South Coast
Two and a half hours west to the coast, and then stop.
Day 12: Arrive and do nothing. Choose your base by what you want — Mirissa for whale trips and evenings, Tangalle for space, Unawatuna for easy swimming. Our south coast beaches guide breaks down each in turn.
Day 13: A whale watching morning from Mirissa if you are travelling between November and April, then Galle Fort in the afternoon — the ramparts at sunset are the right way to end a trip.
Day 14: Breakfast, then the expressway to the airport. Allow four hours from the coast including a stop.
Stay: South coast Driving: 2.5 hours on day 12, plus the airport transfer
Three Ways to Vary the Route
The east coast version (May to September). Swap the south coast finish for Trincomalee or Arugam Bay. Between May and September the southwest is under monsoon while the east is at its best — this is not a compromise, it is the correct route for those months. Reach Trincomalee from the Cultural Triangle rather than from the hill country.
The northern version. Replace the Adam's Peak night and one coastal night with two nights in Jaffna, reached from Anuradhapura. It is a genuinely different culture, food and landscape, and very few visitors make it up there.
The slow version. Cut Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa entirely, and give the four recovered days to the coast. If what you actually want is a beach holiday with some culture attached rather than the reverse, this is the honest route.
We run versions of all three. The ancient cities and the north are the backbone of our cultural tours; the Adam's Peak and Horton Plains legs belong to our adventure tours; and if none of them is quite right, a tailor-made tour starts from your dates rather than ours.
How This Differs From Ten Days
If you are weighing the two, this is what the extra four days actually buy:
| Ten Days | Fourteen Days |
|---|---|
| Sigiriya and Dambulla | Adds Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa |
| No Adam's Peak | Adam's Peak with a proper recovery day |
| Two coastal nights | Three coastal nights |
| One safari | Two, or one plus the elephant gathering |
| Every base is two nights | Room to stay longer where you like it |
The ten-day version is set out day by day in our 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary.
Practical Notes
- Book the hill country train the moment your dates are fixed. It is the only genuinely capacity-limited part of this route.
- A private driver for two weeks removes every transfer problem and works out well for two or more people.
- Pack for three climates: coastal heat, hill country cold, and a pre-dawn mountain summit.
- Carry small notes. Park fees, tea stalls and tuk tuks are all cash.
- Do not add a destination. If you find yourself with a spare day, give it to the coast.
